Assignment 2: Line

1. Immediate Response: When I first look at this photo I think: "A little boring, but slightly interesting nonetheless". I notice that the main aspect in this photo is a lot of straight, contour lines with smaller secondary contour lines within them. What stands out the most would be the coloration and the highlights on the railing. There is a nice combination of darker and lighter colors in the concrete, the wall and the bricks of the steps. It is also noticeable that the coloration is patterned half-n-half: left is light and right is dark.

2. Object Description: The photo is of a staircase and railing. White bricks are behind and slightly to the left of the staircase. The railing is made of a monochromatic silver color and the stairs of a reddish ochre color. The bricks of the staircase are exactly square (and maybe a little dirty).

3. Formal Matters: The color placement, though fairly un-unique, gives the photo a bit of symmetrical quality with a nice slant of light against dark, light on the left and dark on the right. The lines are, for the most part, straight edge and fairly well-defined. It is easy to see the difference in thickness of the lines and quality of the lines. The space is nicely filled. Even the white brick walls in the background have space filled with lines of their owns, as well as a little texture.

4. The Story It Tells: For the most part, no, the photo does not tell a story other than the story of a lot of use. The stairs look a little bit dirty. If I were to name the photo, it would be journey. It is easy to see that many people have "journeyed" up and down the staircase on their way to do whatever it is they needed to do.

5. The Work in the World: Compared to Honore Daumier's drawings, mine is much more straight edge and doesn't tell a story like his masterpieces. There is also much less feeling and emotion in my picture compared to Daumier's drawings.
